Welsh Conservatives' Economic Commission

As some of you are aware, the Welsh Conservatives have set up an economic commission to look at policies for the future.

I am honoured to be chairing this group and will be taking evidence, for the first time today, in Cardiff.

By undertaking a 'select committee' format, we will hear from businesses, academics and a range of representative organisations, including the FSB, the Welsh Tourism Alliance, the CBI and the EEF. We will be following this up with other meetings around the country.

We hope to be able to offer a new fresh approach to economic development and, at the very least, offer the business sector an opportunity to put forward their views on the future of the Welsh and UK economy.

Whatever happened to Leighton Andrews and his economic commission (which seem to quickly follow your announcement). Anything happened?

I suppose it has to be done and you have to listen to all points of view, undertake consultation etc etc but I can't help thinking that you probably already know what people think and want and the solutions are there (the business sector's views are pretty well known already)... what is needed is leadership, a vision and its implementation.

So after all this you will come up with some policies ... so what (to quote a phrase of Ed Balls')!

You need to win power first, in the Assembly and in Parliament and in spite of Labour's overall meltdown many people still remember and are suspicious of the Tories.

Dylan, you may well be the 'jewel in the crown' of the Welsh Conservatives as the rest of your fellow travelers don't exactly inspire confidence - some of the (few) Tory candidates in my area could have come from the Middle (Dark) Ages to put it mildly.

Anyway, I don't want to be too negative so good luck and I hope your ideas prevail.
