Sony cuts 8000 jobs

Electronics giant Sony has announced, out of the blue, that it is to lose 8,000 jobs and close 10 per cent of its manufacturing sites.

As yet, there is no specific news about the Bridgend plant but we can only hope that it is not one of those on the closure list.

The actual figure is 16,000 jobs. 8000 permanent, and 8000 agency or short term contracts. I know Sony used to employ agency (I was one!) wouldn't imagine things have changed much since.

I wouldn't mind guessing that Sony have probably been quietly terminating agency contracts for the last few months anyway, but who cares or reports it when agency workers are binned?
These are scary times, Dylan.
sorry too quick!!

I agree and it looks like getting worse. My major worry is unemployment and the effect that will have on the economy. In Wales, if we get the inward investors retrenching back to their own countries, we could see thousands of jobs lost
