AND SO IT BEGINS...

With 2010 being an election year, the Labour Party will rely heavily on persuading the Welsh media to put across a distorted view of the choice facing electors.

Take, for example, the interview with Peter Hain today in the Western Mail.

Whilst trying to claim the mantle of radicalism in Welsh politics, the article has only one mention of a Labour Policy - national care homes.

The rest of the article goes on a predictable anti-Tory rant i.e. "fear of the Tories", that the Labour Party is up against "tax-exile millions", attacking "Conservative plans to reduce Britain’s £1.2 trillion national debt", that the Tories "would represent a really ominous and serious threat", and that there is the danger will have "a Tory government with a clenched fist that will smash into public services."

Is this going to be the level of debate in the run-up to the next general election?

The Welsh media cannot continue to allow Peter Hain and the rest of the Labour Party in Wales to get away with interviews which don't contain any serious in-depth questioning of Labour policies and how, in the opinion of many, they have failed this country?

I can absolutely assure you that the Conservative Party would not get such an easy ride if they had brought the country to its knees and caused millions of people to lose their jobs.

Indeed, even when the Conservative Party offers an alternative view as Cheryl Gillan did last week, then the Welsh media cannot wait to get an Assembly Labour backbencher to comment.

Did Carwyn Jones' New Year's message get similar scrutiny from opposition spokespersons? Of course not, even though it was light of any policies for the future.

2010 could be one of the most momentous years in recent political history and in the run-up to such an election, Wales really does deserve better scrutiny of its politicians, especially those who are currently in power.

The Welsh Tories must not let them get away with it either, get them on the hook and keep them there!
All the best to you and your loved ones!

and the most perfect example of new media bias is WalesHome, which is essentially a Labour supporting online magazine. I dont know what you and Melding bother writing for it as the rest of it is welsh labour through and through.

Everyone in Cardiff Bay knows that one of its founders has already put his hat in the ring for a special advisor's role under Carwyn Jones, which demonstrates perfectly the incestuous nature of the welsh media, the lobbyists and politics.

I agree with that analysis really, the Welsh media has always been in Labour's pocket. But I can't feel any sympathy from the Conservatives. A better line for you, would be to say 'if we are so bad, why did Labour emulate our economic policies during the boom years?' Because it's a fact that they did, look how many times the Tories voted in favour of Blair on the economy in Parliament.

Wrong - I have heard it is Daran Hill. If it is true, then his impartiality as a political observer has now been blown completely out of the water.

It hardly a secret that the Western Mail, South Wales Echo and most local welsh newspapers are owned by Trinity Mirror its Labour/left bias is well known and added to that the quality of political journalism in Wales which is pathetic and you get the type of articles you mention and populate the Western Mail pages daily.

But what i don't understand from a Welsh Tory perspective is why you don't have your own welsh newspaper or online newspaper/magazine as you said to counter what the Western Mail and WAG churn out on a daily basis as well as give a right wing perspective, i mean its not as if your party don't have enough wealthy backers that could bankroll the project or have access to good local journalists who would be grateful for the work.

As for the new First Minister Carwyn Jones if he's really hiring Normal Mouth aka Adam Higgit as a SPAD then it proves Welsh Labour hasn't changed a bit and Carwyn is nothing more than Rhodri Morgan Mark 2 - God help us.

Out of interest was the Special Adviser job advertised anywhere, if not how did Adam find out about it?

THE CRACHACH

Unlike me, do you consider yourself part of 'the establishment' here in Wales?  As thousands gather for the Eisteddfod in Mold this morning, they will, according to some social commentators, not be participating in the greatest cultural festivals of Europe. Instead, they will merely be bit-part players in one of the annual gatherings of the great and good of Wales.  Unkindly, this set of the movers and shakers in Welsh society is known as 'the crachach' , and constitute a social class all of their own, dominating the educational, cultural and media sectors of Wales and allegedly looking down upon any outsider with new ideas, reinforcing mediocrity and failing to see beyond the limits of their own narrow experience.  They are said to live in a comfort zone that awaits the expected invitation to the next glass of chilled chardonnay and canapés, forgetting that due to their lack of leadership and drive, Wales remains firmly rooted to the bottom of the UK prosperity league ...

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CREATIVE CLASSES

One of my favourite academic books of the last two decades must be the “Rise of the Creative Classes” by Professor Richard Florida.  This was one of the first detailed studies of the growing group of individuals who use their creativity and mental labour to earn a living and not only included those in arts and entertainment, but also people working in science and technology as well as knowledge-based professions such as healthcare, law, business, and finance.  Fast forward to 2022 and Professor Florida has written an updated report on the creative classes although he and his team now identify a different type of individual who is taking full advantage of the growth in digital platforms, social media, and online marketplaces.  Such ‘creators’ are defined as those who use digital technology to make and publish unique creative content, whether in the form of video, film, art, music, design, text, games, or any other media that audiences can access and respond to.  They ...

GLOBAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP MONITOR WALES 2022

How entrepreneurial is Wales? That is the question that the latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) attempts to answer in its latest report which investigates those involved in early-stage entrepreneurship i.e. starting and managing a new business.  This year’s results show that the rate of total early-stage entrepreneurship (TEA) in Wales in 2021 was 10.3% as compared to 11.5% for the UK. This is significantly higher than the previous year (6.5%) and means that around 192,000 adults aged between 18 and 64 are involved in entrepreneurial activity in Wales.  Nearly three quarters are in the very early stages of starting a business and the rest involved in managing a new business aged between 4 and 42 months old.  This is an important finding as not only is the overall rate of entrepreneurial activity in Wales increasing but this is largely accounted for by those starting a business. In this respect, it is critical that the right support mechanisms are in place to ensu...
