ISTANBUL NOT CONSTANTINOPLE

Another week, another continent!

However, I am really excited to be here in Turkey for the very first time to speak at the Digital Economy e-commerce summit, to be held over the next couple of days in Istanbul.

There are over 300 delegates at this conference and, given Turkey's economic growth and the fact that it is in the global top ten of internet usage (with 27 million internet users), the event should be one that creates considerable debate as to how this nation develops in the future.

I am particularly looking forward to the speech by David Rowan, editor of Wired magazine, on the ten trends that are going to change the digital economy in the future.

Also, as I am sharing the stage tomorrow with Zafer Çağlayan, the Turkish Minister for the Economy, it will also create an opportunity to see whether we can link in Welsh fast growth firms into this growing economy.

More on this later.

Good luck - given the mess that the Labour Party are making of helping the Welsh economy, every little helps!

But how many direct flights are there fom the UK to the Turkish capital Ankara?

Took a flight from Cardiff at 1725 and was in Istanbul 5 hours later (via Amsterdam).

For once, the KLM link worked!

I'm glad the KLM link worked. When I travelled to Amsterdam a few years back for the WJEC the Dutch businessmen I met thought that I was basically insane to have flown with KLM. They then began to recount various nightmare journeys with KLM and days spent waiting for planes in the Dutch West Indies and other exotic places. My question was a serious one because I understand that there is no direct flight to Ankara from even London and hence the need to get on with a new London hub asap. Recently the First Minister talked about direct flights to Chungking. Interestingly the only direct flights from a European capital to Western China are by Finnair from Helsinki.
